Review: Magic Rises – Ilona Andrews
Magic Rises – Ilona AndrewsBook Depository Amazon Goodreads
Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost.
Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.
Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…
The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, the husband and wife writing team is one of my most treasured series – aka I’m totally biased. I eagerly await each new entry. The 5th novel in the series, Magic Slays was released in May 2011 so it’s been a long 2 year wait for my Kate and Curran fix but it was worth it because Magic Rises, the sixth entry in the series is brilliant. This is the rare series where each book is better than the previous novel. The series just keeps getting better and better with Magic Rises exceeding all my lofty expectations!
Magic Rises finds Kate and company off on a little jaunt, leaving Atlanta temporarily behind and heading to Europe. There is a possibility of obtaining a special medicine that will help to prevent the children of the pack from succumbing to a shape-shifter type madness during their teenage years. Kate, Curran et al hopefully if grimly set off across the Atlantic. Needless to say, things don’t go smoothly!
Magic Rises is fantastic – I loved every page. The novel is funny, bloody, sad and ultimately breath-taking. The world building is detailed and intricate as always with Ilona Andrews. I love the extended cast of characters – all unique, complex and amazing in their own way. Kate and Curran are their typical stubborn and awesome selves. The plot is interesting and fast paced but I’m just in love with the characters. I highly, highly recommend this series.
